Levi Frazier

Levi Frazier, Jr. is an, actor/writer/director/producer and an associate professor of Communications, Graphic & Fine Arts at Southwest Tennessee Community College. In the past five years, he has also created and directed the college’s Theatre study abroad programs to England and Greece. In his eight-year tenure at the college, he has directed, written, or produced over twenty-five plays ranging from contemporary musicals to classic Greek dramas. In addition, he is co-founder and managing director of Blues City Cultural Center, the oldest African American theatre arts organization in West Tennessee. His A Tribute to Richard Wright was produced in Paris, France, by invitation, for an international festival. In 2008 he traveled to Poland to conduct research on his play, For Our Freedom & Yours, the story of the 19th-century internationally acclaimed black actor Ira Aldridge. The play had its world premiere in 2015 as part of the Memphis in May Festival, which honored Poland.

For two consecutive years, Levi participated in the BLACK INTERNATIONAL CINEMA FESTIVAL-BERLIN where he delivered a keynote address and conducted workshops on the importance of African theatre in diaspora. Levi’s The Juneteenth Story premiered at Memphis’s 2000-seat Cannon Center in February 2013, and is scheduled for another production in February 2015. He has had several works commissioned by the National Civil Rights Museum and a play, Beale Street Back Again, commissioned by the State of Tennessee for its Bicentennial. He is the author of several anthologized short stories, numerous articles, and two books: Tickle The Rain, a children’s book, and 151 Things That Happen or Don’t Happen When You Turn 50. His awards include: Germantown Arts Alliance Literary Award; Chattanooga Theatre Center’s Playwriting Award; featured artist at the World Affairs Conference in Boulder, Colorado; and Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s Southern Writers Project Fellow. He is married to Deborah Frazier and is the proud father of Ayana, Levi, and Matthew, and the proud grandfather of Leah and Michaela.
